⚠️ What's Being Retired
The legacy Bing Maps visual in Power BI is being deprecated. Microsoft has not announced a hard retirement date yet, but the Azure Maps visual is now the official replacement and the Bing Maps visual will stop receiving updates and support.
If your reports use the Bing Maps visual — identifiable by the Bing logo in the visual header — you need to plan migration to Azure Maps.
🗺️ What Azure Maps Offers Over Bing Maps
- Marker customisation — custom icons, size scaling by data measure, colour and transparency control
- Category icons — distinct icons per data category (trucks, warehouses, alerts etc.)
- Modern formatting pane — consistent with all other Power BI visuals (May 2026 update)
- Better enterprise support — Azure Maps integrates with Azure security, RBAC, and private endpoints
- Real-time data support — works with streaming datasets for live location tracking
🔧 How to Migrate — 3 Steps
- Open your report in Power BI Desktop → identify any Bing Maps visuals
- Delete the Bing Maps visual → add an Azure Maps visual from the visualisations pane
- Re-map your data fields: Location → Location, Size → Bubble size, Colour → Colour saturation
Note: Azure Maps visual requires an Azure subscription for advanced features. Basic map rendering works without one.
